As part of football’s greatest ever fairy-tale, Wes Morgan became a Premier League winner with Leicester City in 2016, it’s a little known fact that he actually spent time here at Aggborough earlier in his career.
The dominant central defender, 32 is a veteran of over 600 senior league appearances. As long ago as it may seem, five of those appearances actually came in a Harriers shirt.
Morgan, then at Nottingham Forest, spent a month on loan at Aggborough at the beginning of his footballing journey that’s now had the most ultimate of triumphs.
Some years after his time with us, he recalled the stint and commented: “I was playing for the youth team at the time so the news came as a bit of a shock really.
“Paul Hart was the manager at the time and he said that Kidderminster were trying to push for the Play-Offs and wanted me to go there on loan to help them out.
“It was a shock for me – I had to get up and go, and I think I ended up going later that night!”
He made his debut against Scunthorpe United in League Two soon after, and fondly remembers his spell with the club despite a few early nerves.
“Physically I knew I was capable but it was just experience,” he continued.
“I was very nervous before my first game but it was a very good learning experience and it was important for me, and I really enjoyed my time there.
“Playing in front of a crowd for the first time was a bit of pressure but it was good, especially to see them getting excited and involved in the games, it really helps and that was the first time I’d really experienced that.”
Halfway through his spell, Morgan scored his first-ever professional career goal whilst in Kidderminster colours, a powerful header was the first goal in a 2-0 win at Cambridge with JJ Melligan grabbing the other.
He added: “I scored at Cambridge – Dave Kitson was playing for them at the time and I remember hearing he was supposed to have been a bit special – but I actually had a pretty decent game against him!
“I scored my goal and we won the game as well so that couldn’t have gone much better.
“When I went back to Forest I’d heard that Ian Britton had tried to extend the loan but Forest wanted to keep me because they thought I’d done really well.”
