In the first of a series of new opposition previews, we here delve into some details of Gateshead's relegation to the National League North.
Following the final league match of 18/19, Gateshead - the second longest serving consecutive member of England's fifth tier - sat in ninth position, and were just eight points behind the play off places.
However, the Heed were suspended from the National League in May, with nine points deducted from their final total of 66.
Following this, the side from the Gateshead International Stadium were demoted to the National League North at the league's AGM on 8th June for the 19/20 season.
This brings Gateshead's ten year stay in the fifth tier to an end, having been promoted ahead of the 2009/10 season - only Wrexham have outstayed them, who were relegated from the Football League a year earlier.
Gateshead's 18/19 season began with Steve Watson in charge and, with the club performing well despite testing circumstances, Watson departed to take charge of York City in January.
His successor, Ben Clark, would help maintain a push for the play-offs as his spirited Gateshead team continued to impress despite the challenges off the field.
The Heed head into the 19/20 season under new ownership and management, with Mike Williamson being appointed player-manager.
Experienced Williamson, who has played for the likes of Watford; Newcastle United, and Wolverhampton Wanderers, heads into the role following a a year as a key part of the Gateshead defence, making over 30 appearances in the National League.
