HARRIERS are pleased to confirm the appointment of Jimmy O’Connor as the club’s Senior Academy Coach following his decision to retire as a player.
The 35-year-old has already immersed himself in his new coaching role and has quickly become an integral member of staff within the Academy set-up.
The transition into coaching brings to an end a distinguished playing career that includes more than 500 senior appearances, the vast majority in the Championship and League One.
Jimmy arrived at Aggborough under the management of John Eustace in 2017 and was an integral part of the team that reached the play-offs and FA Cup First Round that season.
Injuries unfortunately meant Jimmy was only able to feature on just 48 occasions, but his experience and professionalism in and around the dressing room and Academy has made a lasting impression.
As a club we’re delighted to have retained his services moving forward and are already fully confident he’ll remain a huge asset to us.
The former Derby and Walsall man himself said today: “It’s always daunting as a player, going into another role, but I have thrown myself into it.
“I’ve tried to take everything I can from it, and I’ve enjoyed it.
“I’ve been lucky that I’ve had a lot more years than a lot of players who’ve had to finish early.
“I’ve had some fantastic times at some really good clubs; I’ve made some really good friends and memories and I’d like to think I’d be welcomed back by the majority of them!”
Of his new role, he went on to add: “ is a big part of this club… it’s a very lively, energetic place!
“Young kids ae trying to become footballers or, if not footballers, then better people. It’s important we give them the tools to go on and do that.”
