A HARD-FOUGHT battle ended in defeat for Harriers Women on Sunday, as they suffered a 3-0 loss at home to Barnsley Women’s Football Club, writes Milja Stevenson.
A scrappy affair played out for the opening twenty-five minutes, with chances at either end of the pitch, but after this period Harriers were able to take control and play some attacking football.
It wasn’t until the 26th minute that Harriers had the chance to open the scoring, when Abby Bevan’s shot curled over the crossbar from inside the box. This was followed by another clear-cut chance in the 35th minute, as Bevan again took aim from range, however her low shot bounced off the inside of the post and away for the Barnsley defence to clear.
Shortly after, Barnsley took the lead with a shot that trickled into the back of the net, meaning Harriers trailed at the break.
The second half saw a strong opening for Harriers, with the first chance to level things up coming in the 48th minute. Lucy Pugh put in a lovely cross, but the rising Abby Bevan couldn’t quite meet it.
The two sides continued to battle before Barnsley doubled their lead in the 65th minute, after a free kick was headed home. Despite pressure from the hosts, Barnsley got their third in the 88th minute to seal the win and take all three points.
Speaking after the match, Andy Fisher reflected on the importance of key moments in games, as they can make all the difference.
Harriers will now turn their attention to the County Cup semi-final, where they will be hoping to build on last season’s success after lifting the trophy last year.
