Kidderminster HarriersHARRIERS boss Paul Wotton wants his players to embrace the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend which begins in Southend on Friday night. A crowd of over 8,000 is expected for the National League encounter, with Wotton looking forward to seeing his side compete in another of the division’s standout fixtures. That’s followed by Monday’s visit of Barrow to Aggborough and, while the gaffer is keen to take one game at a time, he’s relishing the size of the two clashes ahead of his charges over the weekend. “That’s terrific. That’s great. That’s what you’re in football for,” he said. “You work hard to be a professional footballer all your life, and you don’t do it to play in small games. You do it to play in these sorts of games. “Go down there and embrace it and look forward to it.” Wotton knows Roots Hall well from his own playing career and expects an excellent atmosphere beneath the Friday-night lights. “I’ve played against Southend multiple times in the Football League, and it gets a good atmosphere there,” he added.

“A Friday night game down there will be rocking as well, so we’re looking forward to it.” Southend head into the contest having won each of their opening three league matches, while Harriers have collected four points from their last two outings following the victory over Eastleigh and draw with Aldershot Town. Wotton is under no illusions about the challenge awaiting his team, but is determined that Harriers will be ready. “The manager’s gone in and done very, very well,” he said. “They’ve got some good players and, like you said, they’ve got big support as well. “They’re three for three, so we know we’re in for a tough night. We’re going down there to embrace it." Friday’s fixture begins a busy Bank Holiday weekend for Harriers, who return to action at Aggborough on Monday to host former boss Adam Murray and his Barrow team. Wotton insists, however, the immediate attention is firmly on Southend. “That’s the reason [we] wanted to get promoted, to participate in games like this,” he said. “We’re thoroughly looking forward to both of them, starting with a really tough one away to Southend on Friday night, which we’re looking forward to.”

Harriers were 2-0 winners at Roots Hall in League 2 back in 2002. Goals from Sean Flynn and a young JJ Melligan sealed the points on a memorable night. The Reds met the Shrimpers on ten occasions in the EFL, as well as a double meeting in the National League in 2023-24 - Southend winning both of those ties.
